Zalando Tech Hits 100 In Helsinki

Mainos

An international tech company with the soul of a startup. That’s how members of the Helsinki Zalando community describe their workplace.

With 29 different nationalities and over 100 employees, Zalando Helsinki is now entering its third year as Finland celebrates 100 years of independence. The Tech Hub is shaping the fashion ecosystem by developing technologies for the Fashion Store, smart logistics solutions and various customer facing applications. An inspiring working environment is a must, yet what makes all the difference is the people who work in it.

“The best thing about my job are my coworkers: from top management to colleagues, everyone strives to create an open-minded and very helpful atmosphere,” says Mika Hiltunen, who was one of the first software engineers to start at Zalando Helsinki – or Zelsinki, as the employees call it – when it opened two years ago. “I love the diversity. There are so many different nationalities, backgrounds and skills within our team.”

Hiltunen also appreciates the flat organisation, where teams are given ownership as well as responsibility in their work. This startup-like mindset has been preserved throughout the company, despite a massive growth during its nine years of operation. The number of Zalando’s employees has reached 13 000, serving over 21 million customers in 15 countries.

With its 3,64 billion-euro turnover in 2016, Zalando is not only Finland’s, but Europe’s leading and largest fashion platform. As Zalando continues to grow, its Helsinki office is simultaneously expanding - with new members joining the team, a new floor will be opened this November to allow for further growth.

Anna bakhareva, the 101st Zelsinkian, has just finished her onboarding program and is beginning her Zalando career as a software engineer. “My expectations were high after learning about Zalando’s culture, values and goals. I’m happy to say they have been met, this really feels like a place where one can contribute but also develop personally.”

Mika Hiltunen agrees: “If you want to work in an environment where you can use your skills, improve them further and enjoy a bottom-up management culture, this is a great opportunity.”

The Helsinki Tech Hub is part of Zalando’s strategy to become Europe's leading technology company. To fulfill our platform vision, we’re building a strong technical backbone with the most talented and passionate teams and individuals.
