The position is initially fixed-term from 1 February 2025 to 31 December 2026, with the possibility for extension as described below.
Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and deploy advanced AI models, with a specialized focus on generative deep learning techniques such as GANs, Diffusion Models, VAEs, and Transformers. Knowledge of decentralized machine learning (or federated learning) and privacy-preserving technologies is a plus. Responsibilities include collaborating closely with data scientists, software engineers, and project leader and EU collaborators to integrate AI models seamlessly into production systems. The role requires staying current with cutting-edge advancements in AI and machine learning, optimizing generative models for performance and scalability, and implementing robust ML pipelines. Analyzing large datasets to uncover insights for model improvement, develop models as service toolboxes, writing reports and research articles, and translating research needs into AI-driven solutions are also key tasks. Additionally, the role emphasizes the ethical application of AI by following best practices in governance and compliance.
WHAT WE EXPECT
To succeed in this role, you must have a good knowledge in machine learning and deep learning, with specific experience in generative AI techniques like GANs, Diffusion Models, VAEs, and Transformers. Strong programming skills, particularly in Python and frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, are essential. You should be comfortable working with large datasets, building and optimizing machine learning pipelines, and deploying models into production environments. You will be expected to explore and consider different AI technologies as well as making a model as a service toolbox as part of the PHASE IV AI project. Additionally, excellent communication skills will help you collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, translating complex technical concepts for stakeholders.
A successful candidate should also be adept at research article writing and grant proposals, as these will be integral to advancing and securing resources for AI initiatives. This requires not only technical expertise but also the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively for both academic and funding audiences. Experience in grant writing and a track record of publications in AI or related fields would be highly beneficial.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field. A PhD is a plus.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar AI/ML frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with deep learning architectures, including GANs, VAEs, and Vision Transformer models, Large Vision-Language models, and Diffusion Models.
- Strong understanding of data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques.
- Experience with Linux, High Performance Computing environments, and cloud platforms (AWS, CSC, Azure) for deploying AI solutions at scale.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- A passion for innovation and a keen interest in the future of AI technologies.
WHAT WE OFFER
While this is a fixed-term position, there is a possibility for extension depending on demonstrated performance and the ongoing projects at the time of contract conclusion. Factors such as academic publications produced, research outcomes, and contributions to collaborative initiatives will be considered when evaluating the potential for contract extension.
For candidates interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree, there is potential for collaboration with the Åbo Academi (ÅA), University of Turku, Finland, pending approval for a Ph.D. studentship. Post-doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and make significant contributions to the field. The Health Technology research group maintains a very active publication policy; please visit our website https://healthtech.turkuamk.fi/healthtechlab/ for more information.
