Scientific Officer - Epidemiology

1. The job

We are looking for a Scientific Officer - Epidemiology.
The Scientific Officer - Epidemiology will work mainly in the Directorate of Hazard Assessment in multidisciplinary teams evaluating scientific and technical information on (eco)toxicity, exposure and risks of chemical substances to support the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislation and the REACH and CLP Regulations.
The Scientific Officer - Epidemiology contributes to this work by virtue of their experience and expertise obtained in academic research, in human health surveillance, in relevant clinical work and/or in regulatory risk and/or hazard assessment.

2. Key responsibilities

In our Directorate, we assess hazards of substances. We take care of substance evaluation, dossier evaluation (under REACH), harmonised classification and labelling (under CLP), occupational exposure limits (OEL), listing substances for Candidate and Authorisation Lists and support identification of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Moreover our Directorate is responsible for supporting the assessment of chemicals to derive OELs under a service level agreement with the European Commission. Our team works with the Agency's Committee for Risk assessment (RAC), its Chair and secretariat to develop opinions on recommending OELs.

The Scientific Officer - Epidemiology is responsible for assessing data resulting from human epidemiological studies and will participate in different work areas of the Agency.
The Scientific Officer - Epidemiology's main tasks will be in specific work areas of the Agency, such as:

- Assessing and summarising epidemiological data on the effects of industrial chemicals under various ECHA processes (mainly OEL and CLP), including the quality of such data, and with a view to the regulatory framework in question;

- Identifying effect levels or deriving exposure-risk relationships of adverse health effects from human data, when appropriate;

- Coordinating and supporting the work of junior epidemiologists;

- Briefing the chair of the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) ahead of discussions on these dossiers and contributing to the Agency opinions resulting from the discussions;

- Developing, contributing to and/or carrying out internal training and capacity building in the relevant fields of expertise;

- Other related activities, such as providing support to the Directorate's management, the European Commission, and its Working Party on Chemicals, where relevant and contributing to awareness-raising activities for occupational safety and health (OSH) and the interface with REACH.

3. Minimum qualifications

Successful completion of a full course of university studies attested by a degree, where the normal duration of university education is four (4) years or more.
Or
Successful completion of a full course of university studies attested by a degree, where the normal duration of university education is three (3) years and at least one (1) year of relevant professional experience.

4. Professional experience

To qualify for this profile, you must have at the closing date for applications a total professional experience of at least 9 years acquired after achieving the qualifications stated above. Of your total professional experience, at least four (4) years must be in a senior position in a field, or fields, relevant to the areas of work mentioned in 'Key responsibilities'.

5. Selection criteria

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will be assessed on the basis of the following selection criteria.
- Your academic and professional qualifications and their relevance to the main areas of work listed in 'Key responsibilities'. Your university degree must be in a field relevant to epidemiology.

- Your professional experience: Preference will be given to candidates having experience in functions similar to those outlined in 'Key responsibilities'. The Selection Committee will assess the range of fields covered, the type, length and level of work done and its relevance to the areas of work listed in 'Key responsibilities'.

The following will be considered as assets:

- Experience in hazard or risk assessment of chemicals in a regulatory framework (national or international level);
- Completed PhD, in a field related to areas listed in 'Key responsibilities';
- Work experience gained in multidisciplinary teams (eg. drawing conclusions based on human, animal and in vitro data);
- Work experience gained in a similar multicultural environment. Preference will be given to work experience abroad.
