We are looking for a researcher to work in the characterization, testing and integration of silicon photonic components and circuits.

With us you will be responsible for R&D in the testing and characterization of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that are based on our 3 µm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide platform and developed for various applications from communication to sensing and imaging. Your work will mostly involve optical and electrical testing on chip and wafer-level with advanced test equipment. Further development and automation of the test procedures and the related sample preparation techniques is also part of the work. You will additionally contribute to our R&D in the hybrid integration, assembly and packaging of PICs, which reaches from wafer-level to module-level.

Especially the wafer-level activities utilize the Micronova clean room in Otaniemi, the largest micro- and nanofabrication facility in the Northern Europe. You will interact and collaborate with different staff members of VTT, especially in Espoo and Oulu, and with VTT‘s collaborators and customers around the world.

We expect you to have experience in the optical and electrical characterization of optical waveguide components and circuits. You should have a MSc or PhD degree in physics, electronics or other related field, and good general understanding of photonics and measurement technology. Experience in at least two of the following skills is expected, and all will be considered as valuable assets:

  • Measurement of optical transmission spectra for waveguide components
  • RF (>100 MHz) testing of fast photonic components, such as photodiodes or modulators
  • Optical or electrical probing of semiconductor wafers
  • Active alignment of optical single-mode fibers to optical waveguide chips
  • Permanent attachment of fiber arrays to optical waveguide chips
  • Hybrid assembly or packaging of photonic components on wafer, chip or module level
  • Testing of optical communication, sensing or imaging systems
  • Development of test automation in LabVIEW or similar environment
  • Design or fabrication of optical waveguide components
