Do you want to start changing the world for the better next summer? Are you passionate about understanding risks and enhancing safety in a complex area, such as nuclear safety engineering and probabilistic risk assessment? Would you like to develop your skills and use them to tackle the greatest challenges of our time? VTT might be just the place for you. Apply now for VTT Summer of Changemakers 2022 traineeships. Together, we can turn these challenges into a hopeful future.
VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds from 48 different nationalities is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.
Do you want to be our next Research trainee in the Safety in complex sociotechnical systems team? Join us - and let’s make science work for hope next summer!
As a Research trainee, you will be working in a large European research project BESEP – “Benchmark exercise on safety engineering practices” (see www.besep.eu for more information). BESEP aims to find the most efficient Safety Engineering practices to support the safety margins determination and the verification of stringent safety requirements against external hazards. In this position, you will have an essential role in studying and comparing case studies on nuclear accident scenarios and related safety analyses carried out at VTT.
Our team, Safety in complex sociotechnical systems, integrates expertise in risk assessment, system safety and organizational factors to enhance safety and sustainability in novel technological and challenging industrial contexts. We support regulators and the companies by conducting safety and reliability analyses, safety culture assessments and development, identifying risks and opportunities associated with the interaction of system components – human, organization and technology – and the wider institutional context. Our science-based approach helps customers to ensure safety and reliability of novel products and sustainable operations in complex sociotechnical systems.
What your responsibilities as a Research Trainee would include?
- You’ll be studying and comparing different case studies on nuclear safety
- Familiarizing yourself with versatile safety analyses (i.e. deterministic and probabilistic safety analyses and human factors engineering) carried out at VTT
- Studying safety engineering practices in nuclear domain
- Identifying collaboration opportunities between different safety analyses disciplines
- Reporting your work in a scientific manner
- Working together as a part of the VTT project team and European research partners.
Who we are looking for?
- You have Bachelor of Master’s studies in nuclear engineering, energy technology, engineering physics or other relevant field
- You have preliminary knowledge on the functioning principles of a nuclear power plant
- Knowledge in safety engineering or risk assessment is considered an advantage
- Interest to continue as a Master’s thesis worker after the trainee period.
As a person, we hope that you:
- are able to process large amounts information outside your area of expertise and have the interest to develop your competences in the field of nuclear safety
- have good collaboration skills but are also willing to work independently
- have interest for scientific writing and reporting
- have fluent written and spoken Finnish and English skills.
We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start.
What would we offer you?
Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organisation, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth.
