Do you want to start changing the world for the better next summer? Are you all about science and technology? Would you like to develop your skills and use them to tackle the greatest challenges of our time? VTT might be just the place for you. Apply now for VTT Summer of Changemakers 2022 traineeships. Together, we can turn these challenges into a hopeful future.
VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds from 48 different nationalities is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.
Do you want to be our next Research Trainee in our ProperTune team? Join us - and let’s make science work for hope next summer!
As a research trainee, your key goals are to solve materials science and engineering problems by using materials informatic. In this position, you will have an essential role in develop high-throughput materials simulation scheme for curation of the Process-Structure-Property relationships data. With data generated, you will use them to develop machine learning models for guiding the design of new materials.
Our team, ProperTune works on using multiscale modelling for optimal computational materials design, and replacing expensive, time-consuming testing. We have spent last two decades to develop modelling tools across length and time scales together with our industrial partners and applied them to their critical components in mechanical machines and devices. With our modelling excellence, we aim to shorten the time-to-market of high-performance materials by an average of 50%. Read more about VTT ProperTune from here.
What your responsibilities as a Research Trainee would include?
- Develop the high-throughput material simulation scheme for curation of material data from different materials simulation techniques e.g. DFT, MD, phase field, micromechanical modelling, macroscopic modelling, etc.
- Establish the metadata scheme for storing materials simulation data
- Use machine learning and Bayesian statistics to create new ways of building material models. Possible applications lay in the field of metal solidification, additive manufacturing and crystal plasticity
Check out Luis’ blog post to get to know his experiences of working as part of our research team last summer.
Who we are looking for?
- We expect you to be a Master level student in a relevant field (e.g. material science and engineering, computer science, applied mathematics physics or solid mechanics) complemented with good programming skills.
- Good knowledge of machine learning and familiarity with modern tools.
- Experience with numerical modelling and simulation is a plus.
- Familiarity with Unix-like operating systems
- Basic programming skills (Python, C/C++, etc.)
- Good skills in English, both spoken and written.
As a person, we hope that you are a curious mind, who is eager to develop and take on new challenges. We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start.
