Do you want to be part of the management and final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Finland? With us you will be working in a project studying uncertainties related to computational characterization of spent nuclear fuel. In the Reactor Analysis team you will also have an opportunity to learn to use reactor analysis tools developed at VTT such as e.g. the Monte Carlo reactor physics code Serpent which is widely used in different institutions around the world.

With us you will be responsible for

We are looking for a research trainee to work on uncertainties related to computational characterization of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). One such uncertainty component arises from impurities in fresh nuclear fuel and their activation under neutron irradiation in a nuclear reactor. The effect of the impurities on SNF properties significant in the handling, interim storage and final disposal of SNF are studied. The results can be reported e.g. as a bachelor’s thesis or a special assignment.

Main responsibilities:
• Computational analysis using VTT’s reactor analysis tools
• Analysis of the results with e.g. Matlab
• Reporting the results

We expect you to have

• Successful studies on a relevant field on university level (e.g. physics or mathematics)
• Good skills in written English

We are especially looking for enthusiastic minds with strong motivation to grow and develop, so you don’t need to tick all of the boxes right now!

As a person you are

• Willing and able to learn new things
• Analytical and open minded

With us, you can make an impact for a better future and you can be part of solving the biggest challenges of our time.

In the Reactor Analysis team, we offer a chance to get a first glimpse to reactor analysis and computational spent fuel characterization. You will also learn some of the relevant aspects of spent nuclear fuel related to handling, interim storage and final disposal.

At VTT you also have an opportunity to continue working after your summer job as a part-time employee alongside of your studies or as a Thesis worker. According to Responsible Summer Job survey, 96 % of our summer interns were satisfied with their summer internship experience and 95 % were willing to continue working at VTT in the future.
