Structural Analyst (R&D)

We are looking for an R&D Engineer (mechanical) to join our Performance Design Team at ABB Oy, Motors and Generators business line in Helsinki. As a member of the Mechanical Performance Design Team you will perform tasks related to structural dimensioning, strength and dynamical analysis of electric motors and generators. You will work in an international organization in co-operation with sales, design, production and other ABB business lines.


Your responsibilities:

  • Performing static and dynamic FEA, post-processing of FEA results and creating documents and presentations.
  • Performing structural measurements to validate and verify models, systems and materials.
  • Participating in different projects related to developing conceptual designs and mature products’ mechanical performance.
  • Development and improvement of analytical methods and tools used in structural analysis.
  • Pursuing new ideas for technological innovation and sharing expertise in team meetings and technical reports. 
  • Contributing to intellectual-property and risk-management discussions and reports.

Your background:

  • An M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A few years working experience in design or product development related to mechanical engineering of metal structures.
  • High level of competence in the field of structural analysis. Both analytical assessment skills and experience related to FEM are required. Knowledge of different materials and phenomena related to vibration and fatigue of components are beneficial.
  • You are strongly focused in design and development. You have a spontaneous and determined attitude and ability to execute long-term projects as well as ad-hoc tasks. You work very systematically and enjoy working in a team as well as on your own. You enjoy solving demanding development tasks and are committed to keeping agreed schedules.
  • Familiarity with MS Office and skills related to NX and ANSYS are highly appreciated.
  • Experience in measurements of steel structures used for structural analysis (vibration, strain, noise) are an advantage.
  • A high level of self-motivation, curiosity and desire to learn about new technologies. 
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach and strong communication skills. 
  • Fluent written and spoken language skills in English and good command of Finnish.
