WHO ARE YOU?
- Background in quality assurance with automation & integration testing in a cloud environment.
-
Experience using automation testing tools , for example, Cypress or Jest.
-
We’d be very excited if you would have or be interested in security matters and if you were able to read the code or even do some hands-on coding. No worries though if these aren’t part of your toolbox yet, we’ll learn together!
-
Ability to work in English. Our official language is English and we gather people together from multiple backgrounds (memes in Spanish, Indian cooking recipes, database parodies, and dog videos circulate on our Slack channels!).
-
As a person , you are a curious problem-solver with a growth mindset and aren’t afraid of the unknown and nuts to crack. On top of that, you possess a win-it-together attitude and a willingness to spread your expertise with the whole team of developers. Here’s a motivated, development-oriented bunch of positive thinkers waiting for you to share the journey!
WHAT’S THE JOB LIKE?
Day-to-day work & products
You’re the main contributor to the quality assurance of our team. We work on Oikotie’s Core Services & Integrations (among colleagues we’re the CSI squad) which keep our business running smoothly and B2C, B2B as well as internal clients happy. If our piece of code would be missing, new home selling/renting or job ads wouldn’t find their way to Oikotie, Oikotie users wouldn’t be able to log in, push notifications wouldn’t be working properly and billing wouldn’t be in place. So to say, Oikotie would be coughing without our secret service squad!
The platform is undergoing a major modernisation so your main focus is on ramping up our test automation as well as taking care of integration testing of the newly developed features. At the moment, we’re on a mission to get all our testing (E2E, integration & unit-tests) to be automated and as a part of our CI/CD pipeline. Your goal is to make that happen and to ensure the high quality of our production code.
On top of that, you’re a part of the 7 member development team working closely with developers and we’re eagerly waiting for you to co-operate by actively discussing and reporting any quality issues developers encounter. Furthermore, as a solo QA Engineer in the team, you’re aligning our testing practices with two QA colleagues working on Oikotie Työpaikat and Asunnot and developing our common QA practices. How we strengthen Oikotie CSI’s QA processes is up to you! You are encouraged to take ownership and introduce new practices.
Tech stack
We’re currently transitioning our legacy stack to a more modern one. In general, our technologies in use are NodeJS, Typescript, PostgreSQL, PHP, Vue.js, GitHub (+Actions). Our containerised & serverless environments run on AWS and are managed with Terraform and AWS tools such as CodePipeline & CodeBuild.
Developers have done some nice features where the testing is taken into the development cycle and release is done just after proper test coverage is established. Thus, you can be assured that your developer colleagues really appreciate your work and are willing to take you along when developing something new. At the same time, we want you to be capable of cooperating with the developers and not fear of half-made features.
Not everything is sweet, so here’s the main opportunity to improve
We’ve made baby steps forward in test automation but there’s still a long way ahead. At this moment, we don’t have a baseline for automation, so as a QA engineer you’re invited to come and create it! You’ve the freedom to decide the best ways of elevating & developing test automation while contributing to the implementation of your great ideas. This brings along a great opportunity to lead our QA practices & leave your fingerprints on our quality standards! Are you ready to take ownership of the process?
Goals
During your first six months, we expect you to get on board, settle in the team, gradually take over your role and form an understanding of the tech used & our ways of working. You’re curiously driven further to get an understanding of how things work & fit together in order to be more risk-aware and precise in the testing.
Further down the road, approximately after 12 months, we’re eager to see you standing on your own (we’re here to have your back!). You develop a QA ownership, have a clear picture of the current situation, are able to compare, assess & propose to implement QA tools and solutions. You have complete freedom to make decisions on the tools, practices and the future of QA! What comes after that, let’s envision it together!
Colleagues
Development Manager Miro, Product Manager Mona and a bunch of very experienced developers: Jaakko, Juha, Jussi, Olli, Pekka & Pepe (not forgetting the rest of our 90p tech community) are eagerly waiting for your first day! There is a lot of experience within the squad and we’re always ready to share our knowledge and polish our skills.
How do we collaborate? We like to win it together, thus we plan and prioritise together, discuss and decide technical details and then focus on implementation. Everyone works both independently and as a part of the team, so you can count on us to receive help and also support others when needed. When it comes to aspects outside of our expertise such as design, there’re specialists available in cross-functional teams to give a helping hand.
