Researcher, Integrated satellite-terrestrial connectivity for remote controlled and autonomous systems

We are working with demanding customers and exiting applications from terrestrial 5G telecom systems to autonomous systems connectivity, space and satellite 5G telecom integration. Examples of our results:

Do you want to join the Autonomous systems connectivity team at VTT? Our team focuses on development of communications solutions for autonomous and remote controlled systems such as cars, ships, and unmanned aerial vehicles. We develop also ultra-reliable low latency communications and positioning techniques for future systems. The team is located in Oulu and Espoo, open position could be filled in either location.

With us you will be responsible for

We are looking for an experienced, motivated person to conduct research on 5G and beyond satellite communications, emphasizing integrated systems that include both terrestrial and satellite components. Current communication networks typically include many terrestrial technologies but the satellite connectivity is missing. The work can include e.g. development of network management functionalities and implementations and research work with the test network equipment. An Earth station to enable 5G satcom research is under procurement and once received the satcom HW will be integrated to our test network. Part of the work will be done using Systems ToolKit software and prior knowledge of it is appreciated but not required. The content of the work will be tailored according to the worker's skills and practical experience.

We expect you to have

  • Basic knowledge about wireless technologies (e.g. 4G/5G, and LEO/GEO satellite systems)
  • Basic programming skills.
  • Background on network management and/or satellite communications
  • Mandatory spoken and written fluency of English.
  • We appreciate prior knowledge of programming languages, e.g. C++, Python, and Matlab.
  • We appreciate also previous experience on project funding preparations.
