We are one of Europe’s leading research organisations. We turn global challenges – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – into sustainable growth with the latest and best tools of science and technology. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.

Do you want to be the next MEMS Research Trainee?

VTT MEMS team is developing several types of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems) components that enable the digitalization of environmental monitoring, health care, automated vehicles, next generation telecommunication etc. We are a multi-national group of experts.

We are looking for several trainees for MEMS fabrication related topics. Below are two possible topics you would be working with. The exact number of trainees as well as final responsibility areas are decided during the recruitment process.

  • Thin film technologies: Deposition and analysis of thin films
  • Vapour phase etching: Study and utilization of vapour phase etching methods in MEMS device fabrication

What would your responsibilities include?

  • Planning process experiments with scientists
  • Operating various process tools, like PVD and CVD deposition as well as plasma and vapor etching
  • Studying the process results with various measurement tools, like SEM, AFM, profilometer, reflectometer
  • Analysis of the results with statistical methods and reporting

Who we are looking for?

To succeed in the position, you have following background and skills:

  • You can have a physics, chemistry or electronics background
  • We expect you to have basic knowledge of MEMS and semiconductor fabrication
  • You may have an understanding of statistical methods for experiments

The ideal VTT Changemaker is a curious mind, who is eager to develop and take on new challenges. You have an analytical mind-set for turning measurement data into information. The cleanroom work is very independent, you need to be active in seeking for answers. We expect you to have a practical approach with a professional attitude.

Why should you join us?

We offer you a front row chance to extend your understanding of wafer engineering by learning from top experts. This could be your next step towards your master's thesis and a career in research.

We promise meaningful projects, where you get to take on real responsibility: creating innovative scientific and technical solutions as part of our research team. You’ll be supported and encouraged every step of the way by your team, learning from the top experts in your field. And you’ll get to discover our community of over 2000 experts representing more than 40 nationalities working across cutting-edge fields of science and technology.

All VTT Summer of Changemakers traineeships are paid and the duration is usually between 3 and 6 months. The exact starting date can be discussed. Positions are filled as soon as we find the right candidate.
