Do you want to start changing the world for the better next summer? Are you all about science and technology or passionate about business and people? Would you like to develop your skills and use them to tackle the greatest challenges of our time?

VTT Summer of Changemakers 2021 is looking for you. We offer over 30 truly meaningful summer traineeships, where you get to challenge yourself and build your career in a community of brilliant minds. We are one of Europe’s leading research organisations. We turn global challenges – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – into sustainable growth with the latest and best tools of science and technology. Now, we are looking for passionate changemakers – you – to join us as summer trainees.

Do you want to be the next Research Trainee in Workplace wellbeing in knowledge work?

VTT’s Data-Driven Life team in Oulu has a research track on workplace wellbeing, as part of a larger research field of preventive healthcare. We have currently a project “Mad@Work” where we focus specifically on identifying stress in knowledge work and for developing a solution to visualize this information for individuals and, aggregated over large groups, to organisations.

With us you will be responsible for prototyping a visualization solution for the Organisational Barometer in the Mad@Work project.

Your task will be to create different design options that report the findings from data analysis to the users of the Organisational Barometer. You will work on the graphical / UI layout design and implement it as a UI prototype using web UI framework. Two of the project members (design / UX, and engineering) will be your customers in this, and provide you with guidance.

Who we are looking for?

To succeed in the position, you have following background and skills:

  • Study background: computer science, engineering, cognitive science
  • Work background: None expected, but if you have worked with web front-end or done UI/UX design that is obviously a benefit.
  • Knowledge & competences: UI/UX design, ideally competent with graphical design tools (e.g. Adobe Photoshop or similar), practical skill in (web) coding and knowledgeable with a Web UI framework (VUE preferred but Angular, React, and other frameworks can be negotiated) to do basic UI implementations and learn along the way. Alternatively we can consider either of the skills (graphical, web UI coding) separately.
  • Language skills: English is mandatory, Finnish is a plus

As a person you are able to maintain a pace of work independently, even when working remotely, as in the current situation remote work is an unfortunate necessity. You come up with ideas of your own, are not afraid of trying things out and accept that most of them have to be scrapped – a “fail fast” attitude – because one of them could be the winner. And you are not afraid to ask questions and help if something is unclear or if you hit a block.

The ideal VTT Changemaker is a curious mind, who is eager to develop and take on new challenges. We appreciate ambition and willingness to learn over having all the answers or skills ready when you start. You are also a team player with strong collaboration skills who wants to drive positive impact in the world.

Why should you join us?

We offer an opportunity to have your handprint in solutions for a better future, to help to improve employee wellbeing – likely including future yourself! You get to put your skills into practical use, advance them and gain valuable work experience. You will also add to your network brilliant researchers, engineers, and people who want to create impact and build sustainable growth and wellbeing.

All VTT Summer of Changemakers traineeships are paid and the duration is usually between 3 and 6 months. The exact starting date can be discussed. Positions are filled as soon as we find the right candidate.
