Fortum Group Communications is responsible for Group-level internal and external communications to a variety of stakeholders as well as for global and national media relations and news flow. Group Communications also develops the operating model of Fortum communications, including processes, tools and best practice sharing. We are organised into four Group-level areas of expertise: news desk (excluding financial communications), dialogue activation (mainly external), strategic communications (mainly internal) and communications transformation (development). Our team of over 20 communications professionals in five countries works in a matrix across these areas. Our operating model is story- and insight-driven, business-oriented and focused on activating dialogue. In total, Fortum’s communications community comprises approximately 60 communications professionals. We also cooperate closely with our subsidiary Uniper.

We are now looking for a

Head of Fortum News Desk

You lead our global media relations strategy and internal and external news flow, from high-level planning all the way down to day-to-day execution and operations management. You develop creative, proactive and reactive media strategies and support our country communications managers to enhance Fortum’s reputation and mitigate issues that arise in media. You seek continuous improvement of news desk processes, establish global KPIs and metrics, and regularly measure progress and results. You can place ESG issues at the core of our news agenda – just as ESG is at the core of Fortum’s strategy.

You serve as a Fortum media spokesperson along with our expert spokesperson network. You help train these spokespersons and counsel them in facing the media in various situations.

You are also responsible for developing our situational awareness so that we can better grasp rising opportunities and prepare for potential reputation risks. This includes sharing information across the Group and leveraging best practices in PR as well as staying current on new media trends and digital communication opportunities. You will be responsible for the news and media services section of our global website.

Our Country Communications Managers in Finland, Sweden and Norway as well as the News Desk Coordinator and Communications Manager responsible for Sustainability report to you – but they are also working in a matrix with other areas of expertise. Similarly, almost all our team members take turns at the news desk as the on-duty officer.

Your qualifications

We are looking for a communications professional with a suitable university degree and at least 10 years of agency or in-house experience, including at least 5 years of team management experience in complex, global organisations. Relevant energy sector experience is a plus but not a requirement. You are a native-level English speaker and writer, fluency in Finnish is preferred. Knowledge of German or Swedish is considered an asset.

You are the right person for the job if you have skills to turn strategies into actionable plans and the ability to inspire team members to implement them. You have a strong understanding of media trends and a good understanding of ESG issues and sustainability communication. You are experienced in building trusted relationships with media and other relevant audiences as well as acting as a company spokesperson. You have the ability to source and place compelling, newsworthy stories and PR programs and to absorb and synthesise large amounts of information and summarise key points clearly, concisely and quickly – also in high-pressure situations and under tight deadlines. You have a proven track record of solid leadership and management skills.

We would like you to be a creative thinker with an eye for detail and the desire to push past the status quo. You think independently, quickly and apply good judgment. As a team leader, you follow our Open Leadership principles, and you empower but also challenge your team.

We offer

You will get a chance to work in an international and evolving environment – driving the change for a cleaner world. With us you have every opportunity to set the direction of your own development and to grow in your career. We actively encourage job rotation and development activities across the company. Also, we promote remote work, and our flexible working environment is designed to help everyone find their best way to have a productive and rewarding work day. We hope your work energises you, and we are there to support you along the way with our inclusive culture and comprehensive wellbeing program.

To be selected for the position, the candidate must go through a background clearance and a health examination, including drug testing.
