Form of employment: Full time, Regular
Locations: Espoo, Finland
Job area: Micronova manufacturing services
Applications by October 21, 2019

The semiconductor/MEMS wafer fab located in Micronova cleanroom facilitates the whole chain of research, development and small-volume production. The total area of the cleanroom is 2 600 m2, and there is an installed equipment base of 200 processing and measurement tools, enabling fabrication of devices for silicon photonics, radio, MEMS, quantum and hyperspectral applications. The current main wafer size is 150 mm, but the equipment will gradually be renewed or upgraded, in order to facilitate a full process capability on 200 mm wafers by the end of the year 2022.

In this position you will be part of a vibrant ecosystem, where more than twenty companies have access to the fab, for the fabrication of their own products, and Aalto University operates independently in part of the facility.

Relating to an on-going organizational change, the fab will be incorporated in the Microelectronics research area. The main customer segments are in telecom and consumer electronics, space and especially NewSpace, industrial sensing and measurement, defense and security.

We are looking for Head of Fab operations for the Microelectronics research area, to lead and develop VTT’s wafer processing activities in the Micronova semiconductor/MEMS fab.

  • leading and inspiring cleanroom professionals
  • responsibility of operational efficiency
  • continuous development of quality
  • ensuring customer satisfaction

The core responsibility is to ensure the successful execution of high-quality silicon wafer processing for both research projects and manufacturing commissions. You will lead a group of approximately 40 people responsible for maintenance of the facility and equipment, fabrication, process engineering as well as quality and yield improvement. In addition to this, you will be responsible for driving the continued implementation of new initiatives designed to increase the efficiency and quality of fab operations, including the ongoing project to upgrade the fab to 200 mm wafer size.

As a key member of the Microelectronics leadership team, you will work together with the VTT research teams using the fab. You will also work closely with manufacturing customers to facilitate continued production with existing customers, and the transfer of new products from pilot production to low/medium volume manufacturing. You´ll be responsible for cleanroom operating process, and together with financial support responsible for planning and reporting of corresponding financials. You will also be a primary operational interface with the local ecosystem of companies who independently use the facilities under an access contract.

You have a deep understanding of MEMS/Semiconductor manufacturing processes and will have worked closely with customers with demanding requirements for quality and traceability such as are typical e.g. in automotive or medical applications. You have a minimum of 5 years´ work experience as responsible for operations or quality management in a commercial fab.

You have direct experience of product introduction, taking new devices into manufacturing and driving the yield improvement cycle to ensure profitability. You also have a strong understanding of cost accounting and general business processes.

As the head of fab operations you will be a direct interface with multiple international customers and is expected to be fluent in English and capable of participating in complex negotiations requiring a strong understanding of cost factors, capabilities and resources that drive VTTs ability to deliver value to our customers.

Since fluent operations in the cleanrooms between manufacturing and research projects is a key to success, experience of leading persons in different kinds of roles and leading change is important in this position.
