Would you like to have a job that makes a difference? Join our team and help serve 1,8M customers (22M travelers annually) better and save the planet meanwhile! Finland’s second biggest webstore, over thousand trains per year and a multimillion business makes sure that there is enough data to do that.

Data is a core component of future travel and VR has invested heavily in data and advanced analytics. We use data for enabling a personalized customer experience, optimize business and planning processes in addition to helping product development and service design. Our team consists of Data Scientists, BI Developers, Data Engineer, Customer Research Specialist, and we would like to grow our team with a couple of new people.

Why should you apply?

In our team you will be able to develop both technically (modern technology, sparring, conferences, courses) as well as through growing your understanding of the business. We have built a data and analytics platform in AWS cloud which will provide you as much computational power as you will need. We also have a Gurobi cloud license for solving some optimization problems. Our data is flowing real-time to a data warehouse in Snowflake. We already have multiple machine learning models in production and our optimization results are already being used in several cases related to work shift planning and operating trains.

The team shares a common curiosity of technology and the desire to do something that helps millions of travelers. Our team got an AAA-rating in a satisfaction survey and we like our new sparkling headquarters in Iso Paja, Pasila, Helsinki.

Your role

  • End-to-end process of figuring out the need for a data science project, developing a working model, taking it to production (AWS), and helping the end users to use it in their work.

  • Your projects are mainly focused on developing optimization tools to help with planning in different branches of the company. Topics can also include regression, classification, and clustering models in addition to smaller business problems solved with one-off analyses.

  • Identify new opportunities to use optimization or data science

  • Participate in developing our data and analytics platform by providing data needs

What are your skills?

  • You have an MSc or PhD in computer science, physics, operations research, applied mathematics, natural sciences, or a related field

  • Experience in formulating optimization problems, especially mixed integer linear problems.

  • Understanding of advanced analytics and modelling (e.g. machine learning, clustering, classification, text analytics, time-series forecasting)

  • Required technical skills: Python (advanced), SQL (intermediate)

  • Technical skills that are considered an advantage: working in AWS (especially EC2, Batch, Lambda, and Sagemaker) or Azure environment, experience of using git with multiple developers, other analytics focused programming languages (R, Julia, Scala)

  • Good communication and data-visualization skills

  • Business and target-oriented: you like challenges!

  • Finnish-language skills are an advantage

I will start going through applications immediately so don’t hesitate to make yours rather sooner than later.
