Communications Officer
Integrated Carbon Observation System

Alkuperäinen julkaisupäivä 1.11.2018

Climate change is one the most crucial challenges mankind is facing. The warming is caused by the constantly rising amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere: the emissions are mostly human-induced, but also caused by nature’s own processes.

The Integrated Carbon Observation System, ICOS, is a European research infrastructure producing standardised data on greenhouse gases, which is essential in understanding and mitigating climate change. ICOS measures at over 130 stations across 12 European countries, and our data is being used by scientists as well by governments and international organisations in their efforts to solve challenges caused by climate change. ICOS research infrastructure is funded by its European member countries, and has its Head Office of ca 15 persons in Kumpula, Helsinki.

ICOS is participating in two major EU projects, RISCAPE and ENVRIplus. The results of these projects will be communicated, among others, to political decision makers, EU and governmental officials, and to officials in international organisations. To support the outreach to these people, we are now seeking an external communications specialist as our new, fixed-term

Communications Officer

This experienced professional (Junior Officer, Communications) will work in the ICOS Communications team of four persons, and report to the Head of Communications at ICOS.  In this role, you will:

•    Plan and organise a RISCAPE project final conference at the end of 2019 in Brussels, including related external communication and PR activities and materials, finding correct target groups, and creating innovative ways to engage key stakeholder groups to this event.
•    Support in ENVRIplus stakeholder event organisation in Spring 2018, and in general project management.
•    Support in public and stakeholder relations of RISCAPE project. You get to participate in creating public affairs strategies for RISCAPE project, and support in realising them.
•    Implement the RISCAPE dissemination strategy, e.g. publication of material on the project website, organise media and other events, and support RISCAPE coordinator on finalising the RISCAPE landscape report.

This a full-time, fixed-term position from January 2 until December 31, 2019. It is located in the ICOS Head Office in Kumpula, Helsinki.

To succeed in this role

A successful candidate should hold a university degree on a relevant field and have a few years of experience in external communication. The person will need experience and skills in organising events, and other stakeholder engagement activities. We expect also good skills in MS Office and in social media. Experience on web content management tools and ability to quickly learn digital tools is a benefit.

An ideal candidate is able to work together with others in a project-like environment, in addition to being self-directed and having an ability to prioritize. Experience in the field of European research infrastructures, research, or European Union funded (e.g. H2020) projects is an advantage. To position requires a limited amount of travelling.

The salary in this position will be around 3800-4000 euros based on the experience of the selected person. There is a four-month trial period. ICOS ERIC is an equal opportunity employer.
