We are seeking a Climate modeling specialist to join CSC's Digital Twin Technologies (DTT) group. The selected person will have a key role in the operational set up of Climate Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT), which is part of the Destination Earth initiative (https://destination-earth.eu/). Climate DT is a novel climate information system that combines high-resolution climate models and impact models to provide actionable information on climate change. The development of the Climate DT has started in September 2022, with the forthcoming phase aimed at transitioning from the initial prototype towards a more operational system. Climate DT runs on LUMI supercomputer which is hosted by CSC in Kajaani and is currently the fastest supercomputer in Europe (https://www.lumi-supercomputer.eu/).
Key responsibilities
The main responsibility of this role is to oversee the operational set up of Climate DT on the LUMI supercomputer. This entails running simulations with high-resolution climate models (especially ICON, https://www.icon-model.org/), in collaboration with teams focused on the workflows, on the climate model development, and on the model evaluation framework. Additionally, the tasks involve managing the Climate DT operational environment on LUMI, in close collaboration with HPC experts at CSC. Furthermore, the responsibilities include ensuring seamless data flow from the operational system to Destination Earth platforms, in co-operation with relevant teams. In addition to Climate DT, there is a possibility to contribute to other projects related to HPC and Digital Twins, depending on the interests of the applicant. The selected candidate will work with an international group of experts from various fields, including HPC, climate modelling and software development, and who are located at CSC and in other European organizations.
Key competences required for the position include:
- Experience in running climate simulations.
- Experience in working with HPC environments.
- Solid programming skills (especially Fortran) and experience in using version control systems (Git)
- Ability to manage large, complex entities while keeping attention to detail.
- Fluent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Strong teamwork skills, ability to collaborate with an international group of people.
- Experience in model or software development is considered as an asset.
We expect you to have a MSc or equivalent degree in a suitable field. The position is permanent and will be located in Espoo.
We are a non-profit company and base our development work on open source and open collaboration. We have flexible options for remote working.
